Coriander Seeds

Fresh coriander leaves for curries, soups and garnish — sow straight into a pot and harvest young.

  • Bright light with afternoon shade in lowland heat
  • Gently crack the round husks and sow 0.5–1 cm deep
  • Germination: slow, often 7–14 days
  • Leaf harvest: about 35–45 days after sowing
  • Sow directly in the pot; seedlings dislike transplanting

Coriander is in almost every Malaysian kitchen, but it can be a little tricky in the heat because it flowers quickly. Growing it in small, frequent batches is the answer.

  1. Gently press each round husk until it splits into two halves — each half is a seed. Soak for a few hours.
  2. Sow directly into a pot of moist, free-draining mix, 0.5–1 cm deep.
  3. Be patient: sprouts can take up to two weeks.
  4. Keep the pot in bright light but away from harsh afternoon sun.
  5. Start cutting leaves when plants are about 10–15 cm tall.

Tip: once plants send up thin flower stalks, the leaves become feathery and change flavour. Sow the next batch before that happens.
