Starting seeds in a tray instead of straight in the pot gives you more control. Seedlings are easier to water, shade and protect from heavy rain, and you only transplant the strongest ones.
- Fill the cells with fine seedling mix and water it until evenly moist.
- Sow 1–2 seeds per cell at the depth given on the seed packet.
- Keep the tray in bright shade, out of heavy rain, until the seeds sprout.
- Move into gentle morning sun once seedlings appear, so they grow sturdy rather than tall and thin.
- Transplant at 2–4 true leaves, pushing each plug out from below to keep the roots intact.
Tip: label each row with the crop and sowing date — many seedlings look the same at first.
