Okra (bendi) is made for the tropics. Once it starts flowering, a few plants give a steady supply of pods for curries, sambal and stir-fries.

  1. Soak seeds overnight to soften the hard seed coat.
  2. Sow 2–3 seeds per spot, 2–3 cm deep, directly where they will grow.
  3. Thin to the strongest seedling, leaving about 30–40 cm between plants.
  4. Water regularly, and feed according to the fertilizer label once flowering begins.
  5. Harvest pods while young and tender, checking every day or two.

Tip: pods turn woody very quickly, so pick them small. Regular picking also keeps the plant flowering and producing.
