NPK fertilizer supplies nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, the three main nutrients plants take up. Granules suit longer-lived crops in pots, polybags and beds, such as chili, brinjal, tomato and okra.
- Check the label for the dose and how often to apply.
- Scatter the granules evenly around the plant, keeping them a few centimetres away from the stem.
- Scratch them lightly into the top layer of soil.
- Water well so the nutrients start moving into the root zone.
- Repeat only at the interval the label gives.
Tip: granules touching the stem or piled in one spot can scorch roots. Wash your hands after handling, and keep the bag sealed and dry — Malaysian humidity makes granules clump.
