Compost improves the soil itself. Mixed into potting mix or garden beds, it helps hold moisture through hot spells, loosens heavy clay soil and supports the soil life that keeps plants healthy.
- When preparing pots or beds, mix compost into the soil as the label suggests.
- For established plants, spread a layer around the base, keeping it off the stem.
- Water well after applying.
- Top up every few months as it breaks down and the soil level drops.
Tip: compost improves soil, but on its own it is usually not enough food for heavy croppers like chili and tomato. Pair it with a fertilizer, and keep reusing old potting mix by refreshing it with compost between crops.
