Long beans are a staple of Malaysian home gardens. They climb quickly, crop heavily and use vertical space well, which makes them a good choice for narrow yards.

  1. Put up a trellis, fence or strings before sowing.
  2. Sow 2 seeds per spot, 2–3 cm deep, about 20–30 cm apart along the support.
  3. Guide young vines onto the trellis; after that they twine on their own.
  4. Water regularly, especially once flowering starts.
  5. Pick pods while they are slim and before the beans inside start to bulge.

Tip: during peak season, pick every day or two. Pods left on the vine quickly get tough and slow the plant down.
