Fast-growing climbing cucumber for a sunny trellis — first fruit in about six to seven weeks.

  • Full sun

  • Germination: usually 3–7 days
  • First fruit: about 40–50 days after sowing
  • Train onto a trellis; good airflow reduces mildew in wet weather

Cucumber is one of the quickest fruiting crops you can grow at home in Malaysia. Training it up a trellis saves space and keeps the fruit clean and straight.

  1. Sow 2 seeds per spot about 2 cm deep, or sow in small pots and transplant before the roots fill the pot.
  2. Keep the strongest seedling and set up a trellis or net straight away.
  3. Water deeply at the base, and avoid wetting the leaves in the evening.
  4. Once flowers appear, feed according to the fertilizer label.
  5. Pick fruit young and firm — oversized cucumbers turn seedy and slow the plant.

Tip: powdery and downy mildew are common in rainy spells. Remove badly spotted leaves and keep plants well spaced for airflow.
