Lettuce Seeds

Leafy lettuce for balcony pots and Kratky containers — grows best with afternoon shade in lowland heat.

  • Bright light, ideally with shade in the hot afternoon
  • Needs light to germinate: press onto the surface and barely cover
  • Germination: usually 3–7 days; slower or patchy in very hot weather
  • First leaf harvest: about 35–45 days after sowing
  • Very well suited to Kratky and other hydroponic setups

Lettuce is not a natural tropical crop, but leafy types grow well in Malaysia with a little care. It is also the classic first crop for Kratky hydroponics.

  1. Press seeds onto moist seedling mix and cover with only a dusting — they need light to sprout.
  2. Keep the tray in a cool, shaded spot until seedlings appear; heat slows germination.
  3. Move seedlings into pots or net cups at 3–4 leaves.
  4. Grow in bright light with afternoon shade, and keep watering even.
  5. Pick outer leaves as needed, or harvest the whole plant before it starts to stretch.

Tip: if the centre starts to grow tall and the leaves taste bitter, the plant is bolting — harvest it straight away and sow a new batch.
